Dr. Hames became horse obsessed at a young age. A neighbor would ride around the neighborhood and stop at her home to let her feed his horse carrots. Grateful for supportive parents, she was given the opportunity to take riding lessons from a barn in California that would make her the horsewoman she is today. As a young girl, she spent most days at the barn and competed in hunter/jumper events in California and Michigan.
She attended California State University, Fresno and earned her undergraduate degree as a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science with emphasis in Pre-Veterinary Medicine. During undergrad she operated a horse training/riding lesson business and competed in 3-day eventing. Additionally, in the last few years of undergrad, she worked at an equine veterinary clinic as a veterinary assistant which further instilled her passion for veterinary medicine.
She then went on to attend St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine in the Caribbean but quickly realized there weren’t enough horses on the lovely island. Halfway through veterinary school, she transferred to the University of Minnesota and graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2019. From there, she stayed with the University of Minnesota and completed a 2 year internship in equine ambulatory medicine. Addtionally, she advanced her small ruminant and camelid knowledge through practical experiences and continuing education.
Her family includes an amazing boyfriend and a herd of four legged critters (dogs, cat, guinea pigs, sheep and goats). In her free time, Dr. Hames enjoys gardening, cooking, being outdoors and spending time with her boyfriend and animals.
Jolee’s mom was a Vet Tech growing up and she fell in love with the veterinary medicine field as a small child. She was reading fecal results before she even knew what a parasite was. Although no one in Jolee’s family rode horses, she became a crazy horse girl the moment she sat on a horse named Bob at the county fair down the road from her grandma’s. She began taking lessons at a young age and bought her very first horse at 8 years old. She joined Pony Club, then 4H, and eventually competed in High School Rodeo throughout her high school years.
After graduating high school she attended Argosy University where she earned a degree in Veterinary Technology as a Certified Veterinary Technician. While in school she worked as an assistant in a small animal clinic and worked nights at the University of Minnesota’s Large Animal Hospital to get more large animal experience. After graduating, Jolee knew her heart was in large animal medicine. She joined the University of Minnesota equine ambulatory practice as a Certified Veterinary Technician, where she worked for about 5 years.
Jolee and her husband have three dogs, two cats and her horse. If she’s not at the barn with her horse, you can find her in the woods hunting or spending time on the water fishing.
